Teacher Trade! is a children's book for readers ages 6-9 years. It is two mirrored stories within one. The first half is written from the perspective of an American teaching first grade in Scotland and the second half from that of her Scottish counterpart teaching in America. The story is based on Jennie Warmouth's actual "life swap" with Heather Inglis through a yearlong Fulbright Teacher Exchange. The two traded classrooms, homes, friends and families for one year. . . and quickly learned the cultural context of "their" English language. The text reads in rhyming verse in order to scaffold the readers' phonetic pronunciations of the varying American and Scottish English and the mixed media illustrations (Aya T. Sato) add to the reader's sense of being a stranger in an almost familiar land. Teacher Trade! is an innovative instructional tool for teachers and parents interested in exposing young minds to word play and global citizenship and empathetic perspective taking by way of homophones, homonyms, and cultural idioms.
